National Highway Sector Schemes (NHSS) have been created to operate as integrated management systems, within the footprint of ISO 9001.  

The Sector Schemes are included in the procurement process through reference in the Specification for Highway Works (SHW). For Highways Agency contracts their use is a mandatory requirement of SHW.

National Highways Sector Schemes (NHSS) are designed to:

Provide and industry benchmark

Ensure that all processes are planned

Provide a basis for continual improvement

Establish Quality as an objective

Reduce costs for the client and supplier

Ensure a properly trained and competent workforce

Ensure that certification bodies use auditors with technical knowledge and experience of the sector

The Sector Scheme documents are published by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and can be downloaded from their site - free of charge (www.ukas.com).
